Waking the Witch
I never paid quite enough attention to the lyrics of Kate Bush when I was younger. What a foolish youth I was.
This is from the Hounds of Love, an amazing record.
The previous discovery from Adbusters, triggered a memory of the whispered wake up that is the first line of this song. And now reading it I see a much deeper meaning than I had noticed before.
I've been listening to this album almost weekly for the last 20 years. I should have paid a bit more attention myself...

Wake up!
A good morning, ma'am. your early morning call.
You must wake up!
[titter] wake up! [titter]
Wake up, man!
Wake up, child! pay attention!
Come on, wake up!
Wake up, love!
We should make the night, but see your little light's alive!
Stop that lyin? and a-sleepin? in bed--get up!
Ma needs a shower. get out of bed! [words uncertain]
Little light...
Can you not see that little light up there?
Where?
There!
Where?
Over here!
You still in bed?
Wake up, sleepy-head!
We are of the going water and the gone. we are of water in the holy land of water
Don't you know you've kept him waiting?
Look who's here to see you!
Listen to me, listen to me, baby. listen, baby, help me,
Baby! help me, help me! listen to me, talk to me!
You won't burn.
Red, red roses.
You won't bleed.
Pinks and posies.
Confess to me, girl.
Red, red roses,*
Go down!
Spiritus sanctus in nomine...[inaudible]
Spiritus sanctus in nomine...[inaudible]
Spiritus sanctus in nomine...[inaudible]
Spiritus sanctus in nomine...[inaudible]
Poor little thing,
Red, red roses,
The blackbird!
Pinks and posies.
Wings in the water,
Red, red roses, go down,**
Go down.
Pinks and posies.
Deus et dei domino...[inaudible]
Deus et dei domino...[inaudible]
Deus et dei domino...[inaudible]
Deus et dei domino...[inaudible]
What is it, child?
Bless me, father, bless me, father, for I have sinned.
Red, red roses!
Help me, listen to me!
Red, red rose!
I question your innocence!
Help this blackbird!
She's a witch!
There's a stone around my leg.
Uh! damn you, woman!
Help this blackbird!
There's a stone around my leg.
What say you, good people?
Guilty! guilty! guilty!
Help this blackbird!
I am responsible for your actions.
Oh-hoh-hoh!
Not guilty!
Help this blackbird!
Wake (of) the witch!
Get out of the waves! get out of the water!

Kate's lyrics are quite full of magica at times. One of my alltime favorites was off the album The Red Shoes-- a song entitled Lily which she wrote and dedicated to her teacher. Here are the lyrics but listen to the song if u haven't heard it (and go through the ritual with her, it's very powerful):
Lily
Oh thou, who givest sustenance to the universe
From whom all things proceed
To whom all things return
Unveil to us the face of the true spiritual sun
Hidden by a disc of golden light
That we may know the truth
And do our whole duty
As we journey to thy sacred feet
Well I said
'Lily, Oh Lily I don't feel safe
I feel that life has blown a great big hole
Through me'
And she said
'Child, you must protect yourself
I'll show you how with fire'
Gabriel before me
Raphael behind me
Michael to my right
Uriel on my left side
In the circle of fire
I said
'Lily, Oh Lily I'm so afraid
I fear I am walking in the Veil of Darkness'
And she said
'Child, take what I say
With a pinch of salt
And protect yourself with fire'
Gabriel before me
Raphael behind me
Michael to my right
Uriel on my left side
In the circle of fire
